bleu nuit (bn) is glad to introduce to you to its second release red light city (bn02) by nice-based french duo gabardines. rising french djs from the south of france, gabardines is composed by olivier aka ghini-b and régis aka redj. if ghini-b and redj already have a couple of vinyl-only releases to their respective solo alias, gabardines is about to release his first ep under this name. indeed, in 2017, gabardines brought out sweat things ep on simple things records via bandcamp as well as a remix of lady b s liaisons on their own imprint swipe white limited a couple of years before. red light city ep follows the lead or rather, the musical line, introduced by both the label and gabardines predecessor flavio folco (bn01). as can be listened from all three tracks, gabardines are sticking to these break and gangster beats, offering a balanced release with some warmup (a1), peak-time (a2) and closing/after spirit (b1).

hobor is part of many groups and formations himself, such as songs for pneumonia or cointel allstars and the event-series fiktion+masse. his solo project is mainly known for extended dj-sets on various ambient-floors in leipzig and his live-sets - which could be described as cautious investigations into micro-sounds - are mainly based on his work with modular synthesizers. his debut-album on ph17 is a minimalistic, conceptual work that focuses on sound as much as on the way electronic music usually plays. all tracks consist of almost independent layers of sound that behave like improvising musicians. they seem to play together but by focusing on one of them you soon realise they’re actually stoically sticking to there own rhythm and repetition and as the tracks play on these layers of sound start to form ever different constellations. no wonder hobor says he took inspiration from improvising bands like the necks. his album is as fascinating and hypnotizing as one of their live-jams. “constellations is released on 50 limited tapes.

lf rmx is a new series, exclusively featuring edits and remixes originally made by len faki for use in his own dj sets. now releasing them to a wider audience, the second edition presents two complementary contrasting versions of deep in by stephen brown. sticking to the strengths of the source material, faki s sleek polish makes the centerpiece acid bassline and playful cut-up vocal stand out from the mix even more. already quite a force to begin with, the momentum only keeps growing as oldschool drum breaks and additional percussion roll in. the original s linear progression is traded for murky, modulating analog squelches on the deepspace mix, turning the tune into a dubby late-night groover, which still holds some surpises in store. as with all releases of the non-profit platform that is lf rmx, the proceeds of this record will be forwarded to the berlin organization straßenkinder e.v. to be used in actions against child poverty.

udacha continues to excel in its function as a beam of light shining into the russian underground with this wonderful album of grainy leftfield delights from s a d. the duo of vasily stepanov and vlad dobrovolski reportedly find their unique sound by experimenting with cassette manipulation, using magnets to alter their source material before sticking everything together in a hazy, wide-reaching whole. you can tangibly sense the myriad places these sounds originally came from before melding into a thoroughly psychedelic new form on this most engrossing of listens. as ever, that udacha penchant for otherworldly tones shines through plenty on super sounds ii, making for a natural addition to the labels ever-increasing oeuvre.

as icelandic techno receives recognition like never before, so nonnimal steps up to ae recordings with a fine ep that sports many of the hallmarks of this particular corner of scandinavian culture. there s a spacious, dubby minimalism that pervades throughout freyja, but what really sets the record apart is the considered deployment of found sounds, heavily processed and sticking out in the mix to inject some unpredictable energy into these largely calm oceans of rhythmic hypnosis. even without such decoration the music is exemplary, as on the haunting lilt of the title track with its subtly shifting pads tuned to the emotional maximum.

a negative hallucination is an idea that was first put forward by sigmund freud in 1890. he used the term to describe how a hypnotised person could be led to be unable to see a person or thing that was right in front of them once out of the hypnotised state, creating a gap in their reality. sadly, this gap in reality seems endemic in the minds of many in the world, whether from lack of access to facts or from wilful ignorance. the result is the same regardless: a world where many oppressed peoples reality is edited out of the conversation. noleian reusse (half of africans with mainframes) and thomas cox (one third of pittsburgh track authority) got together in the studio in pittsburgh during a week of extreme social unrest in the usa in late 2015, resulting in these recordings. the tracks are crafted with a stripped back electronic funk and a stark, relentless feel that reflects the energy in the air at the time. as long time fans of politically and socially charged music like public enemy, underground resistance, nwa, dopplereffekt, and gil scott-heron, noleian and thomas have taken these influences and mixed them with their own styles to come up with a modern dancefloor version of those ideals. lead track solidarity fills the whole a side with its optimism. soulful melodies and strings conquer the driving rhythms, bringing a sense that through sticking together, a better future is possible. the b side s perspective is darker. police state is a crazy raved out banger that combines gritty acid and harsh tones that channel the day-to-day existence for far too many urban people. the third and final cut, surveillance, is a paranoid, spacey techno track that would be ideal as a soundtrack for closed-circuit television video reels. this snapshot of urban life is tied together through artwork by andrew burger, whose mix of throwback style and current ideas nails the dystopian existence that is now reality as predicted so long ago by orwell, huxley, lucas, and many more.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

moscow label grow continues in fine creative form, seemingly not sticking to a motive or trend but rather concentrating on the strength of character within the music it releases. for the labels eighth release the artist is berlin based the marx trukker, who over the last 10 years has been developing his very distinct sound and recent output on labels like pluie/noir, the untold stories, and most recently noorden, have all been especially impressive. now on grow comes the 4 track vinyl * heavens crackling*, from the title one is expecting something awesome, and the album does not disappoint, right from the off, the first track: * a time well spent*, begins with celestial tones ringing out and the performance develops with great synth work, enlightened and very enlivening, spring is in step and something is beginning. the record continues at such a level throughout, overflowing with rich tones, warmth, and raw sounding percussion. in the second track, * all the boating still a tide to go*, deep warm bass and strings reverberate, as if amidst a hot harbours summer, then the ethereal synths return as magical breezes of cooling wind on a june day. on the bside comes the title track * heavens crackling*, the tone has cooled, there is an autumnal vibe, extended tones of an eerie but reassuring nature provide the ground, from under which a molten bass flows playfully. the final track, * i do anything but its so cold*, as the title would suggest, again time has passed, gone are the warm relaxed echoes of the the opening tracks, winter has come, and a strong percussive energy becomes the driving force of an especially deep and more introverted last track. in heavens crackling there is an uncanny understanding of time passing and representation of being, its present in the patience and performance within every track, and the effect of the album, which seems, like the seasons, to naturally come full circle, is for the listener indeed to experience a time well spent. top marks for the marx trukker!

op.discs highly acclaimed 2013 double pack from radiq aka yoshihiro hanno receives some heavy reworking from three of his label mates, fumiya tanaka, akiko kiyama and aoki takamasa. fumiya tanakas reinterpretation provides an extensive, deep down edition of vida noir and renders the original beats into a minimal bass behemoth of a track that clocks in at almost ten minutes. akiko kiyama shows her peerless talent in her revision of rondo. the beats and pieces are sticking like glue each other to render exotic and mesmerizing aspect of radiqs original. aoki takamasa shows his further involvement into minimalism on his version of calling, channels a micro-house groove into a multilayered beast.

the ep kicks off with the title track >we rock non-stop<. tight kick drums layered with pitched 808 subs set the basis of the track. chopped up machine and voice samples are then layered with smooth pads and delays to complete the track. the second track of the ep >solvent abuse< sees sync 24 sticking to his dark roots. distorted vocals, haunting pads, trippy sequences and dirty bass combined with rolling beats and subs!
the reverse side of the 12 inch is slightly deeper, techy affair. >chosen module< is a spacious wash of delays and pads mixed with robotic bass and crisp round beats. the final track >marios mushroom< carries on the spaced out trippy theme of the side with more spooky pads, bubbly bass lines and hypnotic rhythms.
